Sustainability has become an essential part of modern education. As societies face complex challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and social inequalities, universities are called upon to prepare students not only as professionals but also as active citizens capable of acting responsibly and envisioning a sustainable future.
In this context, the GREENDALE – Green Dimension: Adapting Learning in Higher Education project has published its new Methodology for Incorporating Sustainability Skills into Higher Education Curricula – Building on GreenComp.
Purpose of the Methodology
The Methodology has been developed to support educators, academics, and curriculum designers in their efforts to integrate sustainability principles and competencies into their courses and learning units.
Unlike other approaches that propose the creation of separate sustainability courses, this tool helps educators embed sustainability as a cross-cutting dimension within existing subjects — regardless of the academic discipline.
Based on the GreenComp Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The Methodology is grounded in the European GreenComp Framework, which defines 12 key sustainability competencies, organised into four areas:
- Embodying sustainability values
- Embracing complexity in sustainability
- Envisioning sustainable futures
- Acting for sustainability
These competencies are directly linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), offering a coherent framework for designing learning outcomes, teaching activities, and assessment strategies that foster sustainable thinking and action.
A Practical Tool for Course Revision
The Methodology outlines a four-step process for revising a course or learning unit to integrate sustainability:
- Analyse the existing curriculum and identify areas that connect with sustainability.
- Identify opportunities for integration through institutional policies, partnerships, and teaching practices.
- Develop learning activities and assessment strategies that build competencies such as systems thinking, collaboration, and responsible decision-making.
- Align with institutional and accreditation frameworks to ensure compliance with academic quality standards and long-term sustainability integration.
This structured yet flexible process allows higher education institutions to integrate sustainability in a systematic, adaptable, and actionable way, while also enhancing students’ employability and sense of social responsibility.
Why It Matters
The Methodology is not just a theoretical framework — it is a practical handbook for educational transformation. It encourages universities to cultivate among students:
- Critical thinking and the ability to solve complex problems,
- Collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches,
- A strong sense of ethical and social responsibility.
In doing so, it helps foster a culture of sustainability within higher education, where every academic discipline can contribute to a fairer and more sustainable world.
